Ear piercing types – the ear lobe
Of all the different ear piercing types this is almost certainly the most common. It is just as acceptable for children to have ‘earrings’ in the form of an ear lobe piercing as it is for an adult. In fact, until very recently it was custom to expect all women to have had their ear lobes pierced – this in turn is reflected in the value of ear lobe jewellery available compared to other ear piercing types.
In most cases this is, in fact, the piercing people are implying when talking about have ‘ears pierced’.
Ear lobe piercings are extremely easy to live with, by very nature the ear lobe contains very few nerve endings, no cartilage and no blood vessels. This helps to reduce the chance of problems due to infection and means that in the unlikely event of catching your earring on something (it happens), you end up with a small tear in the flesh that if properly cared for, will heal to be almost unnoticeable and not require re constructive surgery because you took half your ear off with your Helix piercing.
Lobe compared with other ear piercing types
By very nature, all of the ear piercing types are generally quite easy to live with but there certainly is a reason why over 90% of women have their ear lobes pierced.
If you are looking for a first piercing or are looking for something a little understated – then the ear lobe piercing is a good start. Most employers would hardly notice (I certainly would not be able to tell you if the majority of my employee’s have had their ear lobes pierced or not) and social acceptance (whether you are concerned with this or not) is very high.
Ear lobe piercing care
The ear lobe piercing is a very easy piercing to have done and to care for afterwards. In most cases you can have an ear lobe piercing as a walk in client in most ear piercing salons and can often walk back out of the door 15-20minutes later wearing your new jewellery.
Caring for the ear lobe requires the same careful attention as all other ear piercing types however the fact that the ear lobe has no cartilage and has fewer nerve endings means that for some people they can clean the area more carefully as there is less soreness around the area.
ear piercing types – ear lobe jewels
With the large number of ear lobe jewels available it can often be difficult to choose which is right for you. One thing that you should however bear in mind is that the jewel you get fitted with when you have your ear lobe piercing will most likely have be kept in during the majority of the healing process – so do think about whether or not you should start with an under stated earring until you have the freedom of swapping between various designs.
I have added a few earring designs below to help give you some idea of what is available (the designs are limitless!).
